Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person's ability to communicate, and interact with others. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum condition" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause of autism, but increased awareness and early diagnosis/intervention and access to appropriate services/supports lead to significantly improved outcomes. Some of the behaviors associated with autism include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation; difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning; narrow, intense interests; poor motor skills' and sensory sensitivities. Again, a person on the spectrum might follow many of these behaviors or just a few, or many others besides. The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is applied based on analysis of all behaviors and their severity.

The Autism Awareness Ribbon — The puzzle pattern reflects the complexity of the autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition. The brightness of the ribbon signals hope — hope that through increased awareness of autism, and through early intervention and access to appropriate services/supports, people with autism will lead full lives able to interact with the world on the own terms.

Sesame Place Is Now the World's First Autism - Certified Theme Park
Exciting news for all fans of Elmo, Big Bird and the gang: Sesame Place is officially autism-certified.
Working with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, the Sesame Street-themed amusement park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, is actually the first theme park ever to bear the "Certified Autism Center" qualification.

What exactly does that mean? For starters, at least 80 percent of the park staff will receive specialized training (in areas such as communication, motor skills and sensory and emotional awareness) in order to meet the needs of all children, especially those with special needs. Sensory guides will be available to help parents plan activities based on their child's specific needs, and the park will have quiet rooms and low-sensory areas for times when kids may need to take a break.

The changes will already be in place when the park reopens on April 28.

In short, the park will be fully equipped to cater to all types of families... to which we say bravo!

You can find more details on the Sesame Place website.

Generation Gap: What Your Age Says About Where and How You Travel
by Betsy Goldberg
A 20-something's vision of the perfect vacation looks very different from a 40-something's. Ditto a 50-year-old versus an 80 year old. How do different generations travel?

Millennials (born 1983-1993)

This is the most populous generation. There are more Millennials than Generation Xers, Baby Boomers or Matures.

Millennials love to travel. They love customized, unique experiences - not cookie-cutter big brands. They also enjoy group trips with friends.

Leading the Charge
By Brittany Henneberry

In the 1940s, the idea of a charge card was not a new one, but the ability to use a single card at multiple stores and businesses was. This universal charge card was the brainchild of John Biggins, of the Flatbush National Bank of Brooklyn, who started the "Charg-It" program in 1946.

How to Turn On 'Do Not Disturb While Driving' on iOS
By Lance Whitney
You receive a phone call or text message on your iPhone while you're behind the wheel. You know you shouldn't respond, but sometimes the temptation is strong.

With iOS 11, you can enable a special mode called Do Not Disturb While Driving to prevent incoming phone calls, text messages, and notifications from distracting you. With this mode activated, your iPhone can sense when you're in a moving vehicle and stop any notifications in their tracks. A phone call goes straight to voice mail while a text can trigger a message telling the texter that you're busy driving.

A Spring, a Spring, a Marvelous Thing!

The Slinky is a masterpiece of simplicity that has captured the wonder of children and adults alike for several decades. The basic design consists of a pre-compressed helical spring. In spite of its ordinary appearance, the Slinky inspires a tickle of awe when it smoothly undulates down a staircase one step at a time moving with what seems like intent and a will of its own. And that's not its only trick.

World's Largest Seed Bank Hits One Million Unique Food Crops

by Lorraine Chow

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in the Arctic Circle—also known as the "doomsday vault" safeguarding the world's most diverse collection of seeds—now holds 1,059,646 unique crop varieties after receiving more than 70,000 samples on Monday.

Depositors from 23 seed banks around the world braved sub-zero temperatures to deliver duplicate seeds of vital staples such as rice, wheat and maize; black-eyed pea, a major protein source in Africa and South Asia; and samples of sorghum, pearl millet and pigeon pea. Several lesser-known crops such as the Estonian onion potato and the Bambara groundnut, a drought-tolerant crop being developed in Africa, also made the journey.

Printing the Great Barrier Reef
by Marjoly Mascarenhas

Fabien Cousteau, grandson of famed ocean conservationist Jacques Cousteau, along with Dutch engineers and researchers at the University of Sydney, are trying to rescue endangered coral reefs with 3D printing technology. In 2016, the Great Barrier Reef lost a fourth of its coral. Polyps are struggling to build the reefs, which are currently destroyed at a much faster rate than they are created, in large part due to climate change.
